If you’re planning on taking some time out between your studies to travel, or taking a sabbatical from work, then the world truly is your oyster.
While you’re travelling you’ll be able to enjoy new experiences that you wouldn’t otherwise have done at home and learn new things about yourself too. You can pick up new skills, explore new places, make new friends and even learn a new language or two.
If you’ve already thought about your future and know what career you’d like to go into, or what course you’d like to study next, there are plenty of work placements, internships and volunteering positions to choose from to give you some first-hand experience. But remember, your gap year is also a time to have lots of fun, expand your horizons and earn some money too.
To make sure you have the best gap year possible it’s important to take out travel insurance. That way you’re covered in case you encounter any problems along the way, for example if you fall ill unexpectedly or your luggage or personal items became lost or stolen.
Spectrum’s Gap Year Travel Insurance has been designed specifically with backpackers in mind so you have the peace of mind that you’re covered 24/7 when you’re many miles away from home.
Gap Year Travel Insurance provides specialised cover for those heading away on an extended trip to explore the world.
Spectrum Gap Year insurance is available for those aged 45 and under heading away on trips between one and 18 months in duration. Policies include a 24/7 emergency medical helpline which is staffed by both medically trained and multilingual agents so you can be confident that we’ll provide effective help and assistance wherever you are in the world.
As with any type of trip it’s unfortunately the case that negative things can happen at any time that can affect your travel plans or mean you have to return home sooner than expected.
With a Spectrum Gap Year policy you have the peace of mind that you’re covered for a range of issues that could arise while you’re away from home on an extended trip.
You may be tempted to save your money and use it while you’re away instead of buying a policy. But think about this carefully. How would you feel if you were ill in a foreign land, especially if there’s a language barrier? How would you cover the cost of your treatment which could easily run into hundreds if not thousands of pounds? You’ll find that having someone to call on will be truly invaluable and well worth the small outlay when compared to the total cost of your trip.
If you’re aged over 45 then Spectrum offers a Long Stay policy which covers trips up to 12 months (age dependent). Or if you plan to travel up to 100 days then take a look at Spectrum’s Single Trip cover.
Spectrum’s Travel Insurance covers a whole host of aspects and with three levels to choose from – Silver, Gold and Gold Plus – you can select the Gap Year policy that best fits your individual requirements. Some key aspects are:
Plus much more – you can find a full outline of all Spectrum cover levels by visiting our Cover Levels page.
The maximum length of trip you can be covered for is 18 months.
With a Spectrum Gap Year policy you are able to visit home on a temporary basis once during your period of cover without it invalidating your policy. The visit home must not exceed 14 days and your cover will cease from your arrival home and be reinstated on your departure.
We realise that you might be concerned about declaring a condition – whether it’s the fact that you don’t want to answer lots of questions, or you’re concerned about what the cover might cost. With Spectrum you don’t need to worry as we’ve made the process of declaring your condition as straightforward as possible as you can do so online or over the phone.
If you have a medical condition then it’s important to declare it when you take out your cover. That’s because if something happens that’s linked to your condition and you haven’t told us about it then it is likely that any related claim will be declined.
